Reply to this thread to discuss the San Francisco to San Jose/Gilroy service. Looking forward to the end of weekend buses and the "Baby Bullets"? How's about that new Millbrae station? Used the Palo Alto bikestation? Does the SJ airport shuttle from Santa Clara really work? How about the trolley connection at the stop just south of Diridon? Share your experiences here.

Re: CalTrain
Fri, November 28, 2003 - 5:23 PMI drive a shuttle bus (15-passenger van) that serves the
Mountain View CalTrain station. Generally, CalTrain has
good arrival times--right on schedule, or at most 5 to 7
minutes late.

I have taken the VTA light rail to the Metro/Airport
station, and made the connection there with the #10
VTA airport shuttle bus. It is reliable. The shuttle
then goes on to the Santa Clara CalTrain station;
picks up; then turns around and goes back to
the airport. Haven't taken it in that direction, and
that is what you are asking about. Maybe someone
else will enlighten us.

CalTrain
Wed, December 3, 2003 - 2:53 AMThanks Raines for keeping train-consciousness alive. Cal-Train is one of the main things in my life because I'm a San Mateo County exploration addict. I live in SF, but mostly for economic reasons and can't afford to get out, but would love to live in Mountain View. And speaking of Mountain View. That will be the ultimate place to be when the bullets connect to the VTA lines in place to all points south. I only rarely use the Gilroy extension, but I did it to make the trek to Bonfante Gardens. And, one conductor told me he believes the thing will be going out to Salinas in the near future. That will be nice because one could go to the Steinbeck museum. The trolley connection at Tamien is not my gig because the station sometimes feels a bit unsafe somehow, though I can't exactly say why, so I'm ultra-waiting for the direct diridon trolley line to come in. By the way, as soon as I can save the money, I'm taking the Amtrak out to Sac to ride the new Sacramento Light Rail line going out to Florin.

Re: CalTrain
Wed, February 11, 2004 - 2:20 PMDoes anyone have a mileage map for Caltrain? Or does anyone at least know how far it is from 4th St to San Jose? The whole route is 77 miles; how far is it from Gilroy to San Jose? -

Re: CalTrain. San Jose to Gilroy 30 miles
Thu, February 12, 2004 - 9:58 AMThis is what I have from The Official Guide of the Railways.
SF to San Mateo 18; to RC 25; to PA 30; to San Jose 47; to Gilroy 77. So San Jose to Giroy should be 30 miles.
If you need more infomation I may be able to find the Official
SP Timetable.

CalTrain
Thu, February 12, 2004 - 2:19 AMYou can get about a third of the way to gilroy by Taking Cal-Train on to Tamien and taking the Santa Theresa line out of blossom Hill. I was impressed that you could get as far south as that without leaving the VTA light rail system. Gilroy must be at least thirty miles more because it takes a while extra. -

Re: CalTrain
Thu, February 12, 2004 - 11:06 PMOn the VTA light rail, you can go from the Mountain
View CalTrain station to Baypointe in San Jose;
transfer to the Santa Teresa light rail line, and take
it southbound to the end-of-the-line (Santa Teresa
station). Then you can transfer to the VTA #68 bus.
It will take you as far as Gavilan College in south
Gilroy. The CalTrain commute runs only make limited
trips during the morning and evening commute hours.
The VTA system runs more regularly. A VTA day pass
or montly pass will enable you to transfer seamlessly
from the light rail to the bus. -

CalTrain
Fri, February 13, 2004 - 12:26 AMHey, that's a great point. And what's funny is, I actaully did that bus transfer thing once, then, because I'm senile, I forgot. And you're right that it's a good thing to remember because only a couple of trains go in and out of Gilroy itself, but lots of busses do. I must remember that one.
