Joyriding trains. Anyone do it?

topic posted Thu, April 6, 2006 - 9:47 AM by  offlineNana
I have a student who is interested in studying a phenomenom he calls "joyriding" on the CTA (Chicago Transit). He thinks it might be an important use of the train system during off-peak hours, but at the same time, joyriders might scare people?

Does anyone do this or can anyone offer me a perspective on it? (thanks, nana)

I've ridden BART for fun. They even have a special 'excursion' rate for getting on and off at the same station, although in many locations it's much cheaper to get off at the next station and walk back. I can't imagine people getting scared, unless 'joyriding' means something different in this context.

Cool. Thanks. Yes, joyriding is simply riding for the fun of it. Doesn't seem scary to me either. Apparently people in Chicago do it as a social thing--it's out of the weather and you don't have to buy drinks or anything to just hang out.

I used to do it HS to cut classes with friends...."gee, I wonder what Concord looks like--let's go see!"

When I first moved to the Bay Area, I used to joy ride on Caltrain, Bart, and Muni (and cable cars, too, of course). Fun. But, I've always loved trains, and it was a fun way to explore the bay area.

I've been to Chicago. The Chicago CTA is so much more functional than Bart/Muni/Caltrain/Cable Cars that it's a lot easier to joyride. It's cheaper too. And because of those things, there a lot more people that ride on off-hours and the people watching is therefore better.

Anyways, it might be a good idea to joyride with some SPUR or Cityscape people. All us transit geeks would dig it. Bring alchohol.. :-)

i usually sneak a coffee onto BART. If it is a pain to get a seat, then
I finally score a good seat, and someone has left the NYT or WSJ sitting
around, and I have some time. I'll ride a few stops past where I'm heading.
Then when I'm done with my coffee and paper get off and catch
BART back to where I'm intending on going.

If is more comfortable-riding instead of joy-riding, though I do
find it joyful and well as comfortable.
